GIGRISK

Dashing through risk: Gender and the geographical footprint of work-related emotional strain and the practical rationality in food delivery gig work in the Brussels-Capital Region

Methods

The main method to collect information (notes, video, and audio) used in this project is called participant observation. In this method, the researcher strives to participate in the activities of their interest. This means that the researcher will want to be physically present while these activities are taking place. Because the activities that are the subject of this study are the delivery runs of food delivery drivers, the researcher will ask to be present in people's places of work to observe and talk about work routines and how people feel about what the do. This includes who workers talk to or interact with as they go about their day. At times, the researcher will appear to be an apprentice. Other times they may feel like a colleague or a friend. While all these identities may be accurate, they are researchers first and foremost. This means that they are bound by ethical and professional principles as well as by an obligation to follow the law.
